A garbage truck went up in flames along the 91 Freeway Thursday, temporarily shutting down traffic on the 91 and Adams Street Bridge in both directions.
The City of Riverside Fire Department confirmed the truck fire at around 12 p.m.
Officials said the blaze was fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). When firefighters arrived, the gas was “aggressively venting from the truck.”
Firefighters worked to contain the flames to the garbage truck and successfully kept the fire from spreading. No other damages were reported.
No one was injured.
As a precaution, officials halted traffic for about two hours.
The fire department said crews needed to make sure the CNG tanks were evaluated for safety. The Riverside Police Department Technical Services Unit came in and used a drone to monitor the tanks.
By 1 p.m., officials determined conditions were safe enough for firefighters to move closer to the truck to knock down remaining hot spots and begin overhaul operations.
The 91 Freeway was reopened to motorists, and access to the Adams Street Bridge followed.
Motorists were urged to drive carefully in the area Thursday afternoon as crews continued their cleanup efforts.
