Beginning Saturday, fans attending Chicago Bears games at Soldier Field can use their digital driver’s licenses and IDs for age verification purposes.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced that starting with the Bears and Packers game, Soldier Field will begin accepting Illinois driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet.
Fans can use their Mobile ID when purchasing alcohol at select concession stands, bars and clubs inside the stadium, according to a news release. However, not every venue will have a Mobile ID reader. At those spots, fans will still need to show a physical driver’s license or ID when buying alcohol.
Giannoulias encouraged Illinois residents to add their ID to Apple Wallet before arriving to Soldier Field. Despite the addition of Mobile ID, the secretary of state reminded residents they must continue to carry their hard ID card and not solely the digital ID, officials said.
Illinois launched digital IDs for iPhones and Apple Watches, through the Apple Wallet app, in mid-November. According to the secretary of state’s office, the state’s Mobile ID program will “soon” expand to Google and Samsung wallets. A timeline for the expansion hasn’t been provided.
