The Illinois State Redbirds’ Cinderella run continued on Saturday as they knocked off Villanova 30-14 to advance to the FCS national title game.
The Redbirds advanced to the title game for the first time since 2014 as Tommy Rittenhouse threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns to move the team to within one game of their first ever national championship.
Victor Dawson was a workhorse for the Redbirds on Saturday, with 34 carries for 155 yards and a touchdown in a winning performance.
Daniel Sobkowicz led the way for Illinois State in the passing game, hauling in seven catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
The Redbirds have had to play on the road for their entire postseason run, and they’ve racked up four wins in four weeks. They pulled off an improbable 29-28 win over No. 1 seed North Dakota State earlier in the playoffs, then followed it up with wins over UC Davis and Villanova as they advanced to the title game.
That title game will feature Illinois State taking on Montana State, who took down Montana in the first-ever Brawl of the Wild played in the postseason.
The game will be played on Monday, January 5.
