Parts of the Chicago area are under a flood advisory Sunday after several inches of rain fell in a span of several hours.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers parts of Cook, Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois, along with portions of Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana.
That advisory will last until 6 p.m. Sunday, officials said.
Some parts of the affected area have already seen up to three inches of rainfall, and more rain is expected as a cold front approaches the region, according to forecast models.
Localized flooding could occur in numerous communities, with low-lying roads, creeks and streams all susceptible to fast-onset flooding.
After Sunday’s rain, a cold front could cause some precipitation to turn to snow, with wind chills below zero possible on Monday morning. Gusty winds are also expected, with a wind advisory taking effect at 6 p.m. and running through Monday afternoon.
Gusts could exceed 50 miles per hour at times, leading to isolated power outages and difficult driving on north-south roadways for high-profile vehicles.
