The Ventura County Animal Services is pausing walk-in adoptions for rabbits during Easter weekend, and reminding the public that rabbits should not be gifts.
“Approximately 80% of rabbits purchased for Easter are abandoned, end up in animal shelters or don’t live to see their first birthday,” the animal center said.
Rabbit adoptions will not be available for Saturday April 4th and Sunday, April 5th.
According to the animal center, rabbits are not a low-maintenance pet and require a specialized veterinarian for proper care.
For example, rabbit’s teeth grow constantly, which requires extra attention to ensure they do not have health issues.
“Chocolate rabbits and plush bunnies make wonderful gifts for Easter that do not require any additional attention. Do not buy live animals as gifts,” the animal center said.
The animal services center also reminds the public that a bunny is an 8 to 12 year commitment.
