After a chance of flurries to start the weekend and cold conditions overall, warmer temperatures are on the horizon across the Chicago area.
As the weekend begins, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said some snow to the north might lead to a stray flurry or two. Then, later in the day, we’ll start to see some breaks in cloud cover.
Temperature-wise, readings will sit in the mid-to-upper 20s, which will be slightly below the average high for this time of year, which is 33 degrees. Sack noted some 30-degree temperatures are possible in far southern areas.
As the evening hours go on, clouds will begin to clear, paving the way for mainly clear skies overnight. Sack explained that will allow radiational cooling, which means any heat that builds up will escape into the atmosphere and reduce temperatures.
On Sunday, the day will begin with some sunshine before clouds and a little moisture start sliding in.
It’ll be particularly cold in the morning, with readings sitting in the mid-teens for morning lows, Sack said.
At around 3:25 p.m., when the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions kick off at Soldier Field, anticipate clouds, light southerly breezes and temperatures right around the freezing mark.
Temperatures will begin slowly continuing to climb, with highs reaching 31 degrees. The evening will bring a quick rain-snow mix, followed by stray flurries.
Mostly cloudy skies will dominate on Monday, although there might be more sunshine compared to the weekend. Temperatures will slide into the low 40s, marking a 10-degree increase from the weekend.
Tuesday will bring a slight chance for showers, particularly in the northern suburbs and temperatures in the mid 40s.
After that, a surge of warm air will likely come our way.
Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 40s by Thursday, but rain is possible in the late evening, Sack said. There’s also the chance more showers could move in on Friday before a cooldown arrives.
Then, when next weekend rolls around, we could see a return of winter weather.
Saturday will bring a chance of rain and snow, followed by a slight chance for snow on Sunday.
