If you’re heading to Soldier Field for the Wild Card match between the Bears and Packers on Saturday, make sure to bundle up!
Readings will drop steadily throughout the day, making it an especially cold one for this evening’s showdown. Winds started out of the southeast on Saturday morning, though in the subsequent hours, they’ll shift west, bringing in colder air ahead of kickoff.
While the weekend kicked off with rain, it will transition to snow later in the morning.
NBC Chicago Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack explained not much moisture will be left after the transition, so any accumulation will likely be on grassy areas – and on the light side.
By noon, some rain will be left over in northwest Indiana, while snow showers will persist on the Illinois side of the NBC Chicago viewing area. Some clearing could occur as the afternoon arrives, and even some peaks of sunshine are possible.
Temperature-wise, values will drop from the daytime high of 39 degrees as the afternoon goes on, and wind chills will fall into the upper teens.
Snow showers will continue through the evening, Sack said, though he insisted we won’t be looking at an accumulating event. A few snow showers will linger around 7 p.m., kickoff time at Soldier Field.
There will also be a chance for snow around 10 p.m. as well, though there likely won’t be any accumulation. Chilly temperatures will arrive overnight, with values dropping into the low to mid 20s early Sunday.
Winds will relax slightly as the day goes on, and we’ll notice some clearing.
In the afternoon, a little bit of sunshine could arrive after, perhaps, a few morning flurries. For the day as a whole, we’ll see an average high temperature around 33 degrees under partly sunny skies.
Winds will shift to the southwest late in the day and continue Monday, bringing some milder temperatures.
A bit of sunshine will then arrive as the workweek begins; temperatures will top out around the 40-degree-mark under partly sunny skies. Then, on Tuesday, there will be a chance of showers, along with highs in the mid to upper 40s.
Wednesday will bring colder conditions, highs in the mid 30s and a chance of both rain and snow.
That won’t be our only chance of snow.
Snow is likely both Thursday and Friday. Ahead of next weekend, temperatures will drop to around the freezing mark, making it look more like a typical January.
