More protests and demonstrations are taking place across the country this weekend following the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis.
The 37-year-old was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an immigration enforcement operation on Wednesday.
Demonstrators rallied across the Chicagoland area, and are demanding that ICE leave their communities.
A major demonstration took place Saturday in suburban South Elgin, with protesters chanting ‘ICE Out for Good’ in Renee Good’s memory.
“I feel sorry for her family and all the people in Minneapolis, the friends she was trying to protect,” said Connie Salamone from St. Charles. “She was trying to protect her friends and neighbor—it’s important that we do that.”
A coalition of groups, including We Can Lead Change organized Saturday’s protect along Randall Road.
“It’s unforgiveable to not continue to fight for our democracy it’s unforgiveable so we have got to continue no matter what,” said Miki Powell, We Can Lead Change.
The demonstration unfolded as new surveillance video obtained by NBC News captured the aftermath of the shooting. Video shows Good’s vehicle crashing into parked cars as her wife rushed to her aid.
“I look at the videos of her saying you know I’m leaving, I’m not mad at you,” said Salamone. “I mean I just can’t understand how anyone could see that any differently than for what it really was— she was trying to get out of there.”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the actions of the agent alleging Good was part of a mob that followed and impeded agents. U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the agent acted in self-defense.
Officials in Minneapolis expressed concerns about the tactics used by agents and said the video contradicts what they’re being told by DHS.
As demonstrations continue across the country, the Mayor of Minneapolis warns against those causing damage and putting others in danger in his city. Officials said at least 29 people were arrested Friday evening.
“We are a safe city. We will not counter Donald Trump’s chaos with our own brand of chaos here,” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “We in Minneapolis are going to do this right.”
Back in the Chicago suburbs, one man from Mexico who is now a U.S. citizen stood with his community against ICE.
“Well, it’s no longer just against the Hispanic community, now they’re simply being influenced by people who support the Hispanic community and this person [Renee Good] is an American citizen,” said Bernardo Arreola.
Another protester told NBC Chicago he has this hope for his community.
“I just really want to see people coming together to protect the people that need it the most,” said another resident from St. Charles. “These are good people and they deserve our love and protection not any kind of violence or anger.”
