California Congressman Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he is resigning from congress as the fallout from the sexual misconduct accusations piled on over the weekend.
Swalwell, who served in Congress for over a decade, said on social media that he is taking “responsibility and ownership for the mistakes” he made.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff and constituents for mistakes in judgement I’ve made in my past,” the Bay Area congressman said while pledging to “fight the serious, false allegations.”

A former Swalwell staffer alleged in a San Francisco Chronicle article and in an interview with CNN that she had several sexual encounters with the congressman while she worked in his office. She accused Swalwell of sexually assaulting her twice, saying she was too intoxicated to consent. NBC News has not verified her allegations. Several other women who spoke to CNN also accused Swalwell of engaging in sexual misconduct.
Swalwell’s announcement to resign came just hours after the House Ethics Committee said it’s opening an investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations. If the allegations were found to be true, Swalwell could have been expelled from the House.
In the same social media post, Swalwell acknowledged the “efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote” against him.
“Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” he said.
The former Alameda County prosecutor added he will work with his staff in the coming days, so they can continue to serve the 14th congressional district without him.
Swalwell, 45, dropped his gubernatorial bid in California on Sunday night.
