As the possibility of a strike looms, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) said it will notify families by 6 a.m. Tuesday if schools will open.
Negotiations between the nation’s second-largest school district and a union representing 30,000 bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers will continue through the night, LAUSD said. The school district has come to tentative agreements with two unions but remains in talks with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 99.
SEIU Local 99 said it’s seeking better wages, guaranteed increased work hours and adequate staffing for its workers, it said.
Should negotiations with the final union fail, the United Teachers LA (UTLA) and the Associated Administrators Los Angeles (AALA)/Teamsters 2010 said they would strike with SEIU in solidarity; the pause would disrupt the district’s 1,302 campuses.
On Sunday, LAUSD tentatively agreed to increase the salaries of workers covered by UTLA and AALA.
Should a strike occur, the district said resources would be available for families impacted. A dedicated website has been launched to provide information on food distribution sites, alternative care options, tech support for devices and more.
