Mourners gathered on Monday in Pomona to honor the life of a middle school boy who was struck and killed by a driver while riding an electric scooter.
Prayers were recited for 13-year-old Angel Mendoza, who was a seventh-grade student at Simons Middle School in Pomona. He was remembered as an active member of his church as an altar boy.
“He should still be with us. He was a good person, said Karen Torres, the boy’s cousin. “…We feel like we’re in a dream and we’re going to wake up, but we don’t wake up.”
Mendoza’s loved ones said they still can’t believe the young boy is gone.
The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday on San Antonio Avenue. The boy died at the hospital on Sunday. According to Mendoza’s loved ones, the driver stopped and cooperated with the police.
Grieving loved ones said Mendoza had aspirations of becoming a police officer. As the youngest of his family, he was very close to his parents and his sister.
“He was kind, loving, caring, and that’s how we should remember him,” Torres said.
