As the family of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez navigates their grief while her murder case continues, one Lake Elsinore resident is doing what she can to comfort her neighbors and ensure the victim’s memory is honored.
The body of Hernandez, who was from Lake Elsinore, was found dismembered in a Tesla truck registered to singer D4vd last September. The singer, whose real name is David Burke, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the case.
Burke appeared in court for the first time Monday, with Hernandez’s family present. They declined to comment publicly.
Neighbors of the victim’s family said they want justice for the young girl, and Kayleigh Cortez said she’s determined to make Hernandez’s memory live on with a growing memorial that she set up.
“I keep the lights on and make sure they work so this doesn’t go dark,” Cortez said.
The memorial, which is centered around a large banner that reads “Justice for Celeste Rivas,” is adorned with numerous flower bouquets, teddy bears and candles. Tea lights were also assembled to read the young teen’s name.
“I’ve seen families kneeling down with children, maybe praying to her,” Cortez said. “Thinking about memories about her.”
The singer known as D4vd makes his first court appearance. Alex Rozier reports for the NBC4 News at 3 p.m. on Monday April 20, 2026.
Cortez said she didn’t know Rivas personally, but learned more about her as the investigation unfolded.
“She was a real person and lived a real life and deserves all the justice,” she said.
Burke is scheduled to return to court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
