Changes to make drop-off and pick-up safer for students and families could be coming to hundreds of schools in Los Angeles.
City leaders plan to discuss a proposal to lower the speed limit around some campuses. The default school zone speed limit is 25 mph, but many LAUSD campuses have a 15 mph speed limit when children are present. The city’s transportation committee plans to discuss expanding the 15 mph limit to more than 200 campuses.
The goal is to enact the expanded 15 mph speed limit by August in time for the start of the new school year. The transportation department plans to use money already approved by Measure M to pay for the plan, which would include new signs to make drivers aware of the change.
