Earlier, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the protester bit off the officer’s finger following the shooting of 37-year-old Illinois-born intensive care unit nurse Alex Pretti. DHS’s claim has not been verified by NBC News.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also shared graphic images in a post on X of what appear to be the tip of the finger and the bloody wound.
“He will lose his finger,” McLaughlin said in the post.
McLaughlin’s post, including the images, has been reposted by White House officials and President Trump.
