The Chicago area is going to see a bit more snow on Sunday as a massive winter storm hits most of the eastern U.S., but another blast of Arctic air looms this week.
Most of the Chicago area has seen accumulating snow overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning, and at least 1-to-2 inches of snow are expected by the time the system moves out of the area in the afternoon hours, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
What’s more, lake-effect snow is going to enhance totals in Lake and Cook counties on Sunday morning, with that snow slowly pushing into northwest Indiana as winds shift out of the northwest by the afternoon.
That shift in winds is going to usher in another blast of Arctic air, with conditions similar to what the area experienced on Friday, according to forecast models.
Air temperatures Sunday will likely rise into the mid-to-upper teens, but wind chills will remain frigid, hovering in the low single-digits, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
The snow will likely start to end in the late morning across most of the area, though it could continue in areas south of Interstate 80 through the early afternoon. Lake-effect snow could impact Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in northwest Indiana for most of the day as the winds shift, with the bulk of the system sliding out to the east.
As that system departs the area, temperatures are expected to plummet, with low temperatures expected to end up right around zero degrees or even below-zero on Monday morning. Wind chills will be extremely cold as well, dropping to 20-to-30 degrees below zero.
High temperatures will struggle to reach 10 degrees on Monday, and that is going to be a theme for the entire work week, as highs are expected to only reach into the teens through at least Friday, according to forecast models.
There is a chance of some light snow again on Tuesday and Wednesday, but heavy accumulations are not expected at this time.
Finally the area will start to see a slight warm-up heading into next weekend, with highs currently forecasted to rise into the 20s by Saturday.
