A winter storm ravaging parts of the U.S. has led to hundreds of flight cancellations in Chicago.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday, a total of 582 flights have been canceled at O’Hare International Airport, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
Another 108 flights have been canceled at Midway, according to CDA officials.
While Chicago’s airports haven’t received as much snow as other parts of the city, with just over two inches falling at Midway and just over an inch falling at O’Hare, other parts of the country are being hammered with ice and snow, leading to airport closures and massive transit snarls.
In fact, winter storm warnings remain in effect in an area stretching from New Mexico all the way to Maine, impacting airports in New York, Pittsburgh, Boston and countless others.
As for Chicago, a winter storm warning has been issued for all of Cook County through 4 p.m. Sunday, as heavy lake-effect snow is expected to impact the region with up to an inch of snow per hour falling at times.
An additional 2-to-5 inches of snow could fall by the afternoon hours, with some parts of the city already having seen six inches of accumulation, including the Loop and Bridgeport.
After that snow finally ends, temperatures are expected to plummet, with overnight wind chills dropping to 20-to-30 degrees below zero, according to forecast models.
