A chain reaction crash on the 101 Freeway killed one person overnight in Encino, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The initial incident was reported at 1:48 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the freeway near White Oak Avenue, CHP said. Video from the scene showed a car stalled in the first lane, then a second vehicle crashed into it at a high rate of speed from behind.
Shortly after, two people are seen on the freeway assessing the crash. Soon after, a third vehicle slams into the other cars, striking one person who was on the freeway.
CHP said the victim died at the scene. Details on that individual, such as their name, gender and age, were not disclosed. It’s unclear if other injuries occurred in any of the crashes.
It’s unclear what initially caused the first vehicle to stall.
