A 28-year-old Carson man was arrested after what appeared to be a Facebook Marketplace meet-up turned into an attempted robbery, Burbank police told NBC4 Investigates.
Police responded at about 1 p.m. April 16 to the 100 block of East Olive Avenue, where a Marketplace user had arranged to sell an iPad and computer keyboard. During the meet-up, the man meeting the seller tried to forcibly take the items, but the seller held onto the merchandise and called police as the would-be robber ran off.
No property was taken and the seller was not injured.
The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Derriyon Ballard, of Carson. He was arrested April 21 with help form police in Alhambra and booked on suspicion of attempted robbery.
The case will be presented to Los Angeles County prosecutors for consideration of criminal charges. Ballard was being held on $50,000 bond. Jail records did not indicate an initial court date.
Burbank police offered the following tips for anyone using an online marketplace to sell belongings:
- Whenever possible, arrange to meet in well-lit, public locations.
- It’s best to meet during daylight hours.
- Avoid meeting alone.
- Trust your instincts.
- Do not proceed with a transaction if something feels suspicious.
