Rattlesnake bite reported off trail in Simi Valley

Firefighters responded to a rattlesnake bite in Simi Valley on Thursday in what fire officials say is the seventh reported bite in Ventura County since mid-March.

The incident was reported off Long Canyon Trail in the Wood Ranch neighborhood, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Rattlesnakes become more active in the spring — when the weather is warmer and more dry — with most bites occurring between April and October, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The reptiles typically can be found near trails, brush and rocks.

Fire officials are urging hikers to wear long pants and boots, follow designated trails and watch where they step, especially when near rocks or logs.

If a bite does happen, VCFD says not to use a tourniquet or try to get rid of the venom; instead, limit movement and call 911.
