Not able to wake up at 3 a.m. to watch your favorite figure skater take to Olympic ice live? You’re not alone.
Figure skating saw an exciting start at the 2026 Winter Olympics Friday, with U.S. skaters looking for their first shot at a medal — and the competition was fierce. One fall could make or break a team’s medal chances.
The first three team event competitions kicked off with rhythm dance and pair’s and women’s short programs, bringing some of the biggest medal contenders on the U.S. figure skating team to the ice for the first time these Games.
The events took place during the overnight and early morning hours in the U.S. so if you weren’t able to watch them live, you’ll have another chance before the Opening Ceremony Friday afternoon.

Who competed Friday?
For Team USA, Madison Chock and Michigan-native Evan Bates skated in the rhythm dance.
Chicago-area skating star Danny O’Shea competed with his partner Ellie Kam in the pair’s short program.
For the women’s short program, Alysa Liu took the ice for the first time these Winter Olympics.
