Madison Chock and Evan Bates already showed their power on the ice when they helped lift Team USA to figure skating gold over the weekend, but they’ll return to the ice starting Monday to attempt something they’ve never done before.
Figure skating is set for more competition following the team medal events Sunday, but now the competition will transition to individual events.
Up first is the ice dancing rhythm dance.

Who to watch in figure skating Monday
Chock and Bates are the three-time defending world champions, and they’ve been nearly unbeatable since finishing fourth in the individual ice competition in Beijing. They have hardly finished anywhere but first in the years since, winning three consecutive world championships and the gold medal at three straight Grand Prix Finals.
While the duo dominated in the team ice dancing events, they’ll now be going for their first individual gold.
“Everyone still considers them very much the favorites for the gold here,” Olympian and commentator Johnny Weir said, adding “they certainly have the talent, and the ambition and drive.”
But they won’t be without competition.
They showed their dominance in their first performance Friday, where they scored a world-leading 91.06 points to open the three-day competition. They followed that up on Saturday with another world-leading 133.23
Chock and Bates, fresh off their record seventh U.S. title, also are favored to win the individual ice dance event in the Winter Games. But they got a taste of how challenging that could be from the new French duo of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron.
Just before Chock and Bates took the ice, Beaudry and Cizeron had posted their own world-best score of 89.98 points.
“I think our goal was to really keep building,” Cizeron said. “I think we’ve been improving at each competition and adding to our score, obviously, but getting more precise with our technical elements and having more fun, enjoying the performance, and giving 100%. So I think we’re kind of still climbing that ramp a little bit.”
U.S. silver medalists Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik will also compete in the dance team (at no. 16), as will Canadian-born Christina Carreira, who became eligible for the Olympics in November when her American citizenship came through, and Anthony Ponomarenko (at no. 18).
