Many Illinois schools, libraries, banks and more will all be closed Monday in observance of the federal holiday of Presidents Day.
The day, which falls this year on Feb. 16, is celebrated annually in commemoration of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Though Washington’s actual birthday is Feb. 22, the holiday always falls somewhere between Feb. 15 and 21 to create a three-day weekend.
And, as is the case with other federal holidays, you’ll likely encounter plenty of businesses shut down for the day. The day is also observed as a holiday by the City of Chicago, which means city offices will be closed.
Here’s a breakdown of what else is open and closed for Presidents Day in Illinois.
Is the stock market open on Presidents Day?
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are both closed for trading Monday in observance of the holiday. The markets will resume normal business hours Tuesday.
Are banks open?
Banks are also closed on Monday as part of the federal holiday.
Are libraries open?
It depends.
Branches of the Chicago Public Library will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day, according to the CPL website, but that’s not the case for all libraries in the area.
Wilmette Public Library, for example, will be open, according to its website, as will Aurora. Kankakee Public Library however will be closed.
Check your local library website to see its holiday hours.

U.S. post offices will be closed on Monday, and as a result, mail won’t be delivered.
FedEx said its stores will remain open, but some operations may have “modified service.”
According to the UPS website, pickup and delivery services will be available. UPS Store locations will also be open.
Are schools closed?
Chicago Public Schools will be closed in observance of Presidents Day, according to the district website.
According to the Illinois Board of Education, the state’s School Code, which defines holidays, specifies that Lincoln’s birthday, on Feb. 12, is the official holiday. However, school districts can choose to take Presidents Day off, and many do.
DMVs and more
Presidents Day is also state holiday, meaning state government offices will be closed, including driver services facilities operated by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, as well as courts.
Are museums open?
Many museums will be open, including the Field Museum and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, and at least two museums are offering free admission for Illinois residents.
Entry at the Art Institute of Chicago will be free on Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Illinois resident as part of “Free Winter Weekdays.” The Chicago History Museum is also granting Illinois residents free entry.
