The United States continued to excel in alpine skiing on Friday as Alex Ferreira captured gold in the men’s halfpipe final.
The freeskier added gold to the silver and bronze he’d won at the last two games to “finish the rainbow,” as his mother said. Ferreira’s impeccable performance ends a stunning stretch for Team USA skiers: superstar Mikaela Shiffrin claiming gold in the women’s slalom and Breezy Johnson’s captured gold in the downhill.
And that’s just alpine skiing.
In an epic day on Thursday, Team USA captured multiple gold medals and completing some stellar performances. With a skate that wowed the world, figure skater Alysa Liu became the first American woman to capture a gold medal in singles figure skating in more than 20 years.
The U.S. women’s hockey team also avenged its 2022 loss to Canada with an incredible comeback overtime victory and a game-winning goal by Megan Keller.
The United States has been incredibly successful, tying its record for the most gold medals won in a single Winter Olympics; the record of 10 was set at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
While the United States ranks second in the medal count at the Milan Cortina Olympics, the first-place nation is much further ahead.
Norway on Friday clinched its 17th medal of the Games, breaking the record for the most gold medals won by a nation at a single Winter Olympics. It happened in the 15-kilometer mass start race, where Johannes Dale-Skjevdal, who was the only biathlete to hit all 20 of his targets, skied all the way to gold.
