Authorities on Friday night were searching for the hit-and-run driver involved in a crash that killed the passenger of another vehicle in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood.
Police said before 6 a.m., the driver of a Toyota RAV4 with Colorado license plates ran a red light at Elston and Kedzie avenues and hit a Toyota Prius, killing the 25-year-old passenger and injuring a 37-year-old.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the passenger as Ali Abdullah, of Naperville. NBC Chicago reached out to his family, but they were too distraught to speak on camera Friday night.
Police said the driver of the RAV4 exited the vehicle following the crash and ran away from the scene.
Chicago police are also investigating a separate hit-and-run that occurred two hours later in the West Englewood neighborhood. Police said two young girls, ages 6 and 15, were walking across a crosswalk near the 1700 block of West 69th street when a white SUV hit them.
Both were transported to the hospital in critical and serious condition, authorities said.
No arrests have been made in either of the incidents. Anyone with information is asked to call Chicago police or submit an anonymous tip online at CPDTIP.com.
