The Chicago area faces an elevated risk of severe weather on Tuesday evening, with intense storms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail and fierce winds.
Parts of Grundy, LaSalle and Will counties have been upgraded to a “moderate” risk for severe weather, a level four out of five, according to the Storm Prediction Center. A large part of Cook County and a number of suburban counties are under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, a level three of five.

Areas near and south of I-80 including Joliet, Frankfort Morris and Kankakee in Illinois, and Schererville, Rensselaer and Valparaiso in Indiana could see the strongest storms and are under the highest threat of a tornado.
The earliest chance for showers and storms to begin will be about 3 p.m., NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists said. A line of showers and storms that could produce severe weather at around 7 or 8 p.m. could continue through the evening and into overnight hours.
