A massive hailstone that fell during Tuesday’s severe storms may have been of record-setting size for the state of Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.
Though the record is not officially declared, there were several reports of hailstones that fell Tuesday that were larger than the 4.75 inch hailstone from Minooka in June 2015 that currently holds the state’s record, NWS said.
A 6 inch hailstone that fell in Kankakee on Tuesday is being investigated as a new state record hailstone, NWS said Wednesday.
Homes and vehicles across the Chicago area and in northwest Indiana were damaged by the hail, with several residents reporting their windows were shattered and dents left in their property.
Photos and videos shared by NBC Chicago viewers showed hail of various sizes, with some reports of hail ranging from quarter-sized to gold ball-sized and even up to baseball- and grapefruit-sized.
