Races to watch
U.S. Senate
Sen. Dick Durbin’s decision to retire after more than 30 years in office set off a frenzied race to replace him, and there are some heavy hitters on both sides of the aisle for the election.
The Democratic race has largely focused on a top trio of candidates, as Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly are engaged in a heated battle with Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton in their primary.
In total, there are 10 Democrats on the ballot in Illinois for the Senate race.
On the Republican side, former Illinois Republican Chairman Don Tracy is running for the nomination, facing off against five other candidates in the GOP primary.

Illinois Governor
Gov. J.B. Pritzker is running unopposed in the Democratic primary, but several Republican candidates are battling to oppose him in the November election.
Headlining that list is former State Sen. Darren Bailey, who ran against Pritzker in 2022 and was defeated in that election. Former Wirepoints CEO Ted Dabrowski and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick are also in the Republican field, along with businessman Rick Heidner.
More information on the candidates can be found here.
Illinois Comptroller
With incumbent Susana Mendoza not seeking reelection, the Democratic primary for comptroller features four candidates.
State Sen. Karina Villa threw her hat into the ring, as did State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit. Lake County Comptroller Holly Kim is also on the ballot, along with State Rep. Margaret Croke.
Bryan Drew, an attorney from downstate Benton, is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

Congressional races
With Kelly seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate, a heated Democratic primary is setting up in the second district. Cook County Board Commissioner Donna Miller, State Sen. Robert Peters, State Sen. Willie Preston, and former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. are among 10 candidates on the ballot in the district.
Republican Michael Scott Noack is running unopposed for the GOP nomination in the race.
Another closely contested race could be the race to replace Rep. Danny Davis, who is retiring in the seventh district. A total of 13 Democrats are on the primary ballot, including State Rep. La Shawn Ford, Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, businessman Jason Friedman and former Cook County Board Commissioner Richard Boykin are among the candidates on the ballot. Kina Collins, who also ran in the 2022 and 2024 primaries, is on the ballot this year as well.
On the Republican side, Chad Koppie was the GOP’s nominee in 2024, losing to Davis in the general election. He’ll be opposed by policy advisor Patricia Easley in the Republican primary.
Krishnamoorthi’s decision to run for Senate left his Congressional seat up for grabs, and eight Democrats and four Republicans are on the primary ballot.
Businessman Neil Khot, Hanover Park Trustee Yasmeen Bankole, Cook County Board Commissioner Kevin Morrison and former 8th District Rep. Melissa Bean are among the Democrats on the ballot.
On the Republican side, businessman Mark Rice, software engineer Jennifer Davis, CPA Kevin Ake and retired CPD officer Herbert Hebein are running for the GOP nomination.
After Rep. Jan Schakowsky announced she wouldn’t seek reelection in the ninth, a slew of candidates jumped into the race, including a staggering 15 Democrats.
Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, State Sen. Laura Fine, content creator Kat Abughazaleh and State Rep. Hoan Huynh are all among the Democrats running for the office.
Four Republicans, John Elleson, Paul Friedman, Rocio Cleveland and Dongbo Mark Su are vying for the GOP nomination.
Cook County Board President
Incumbent Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is seeking a fifth term in office, pledging to continue improving healthcare access, increasing fairness in the criminal justice system and expanding employment opportunities for youth, according to her website.
She is being opposed by Chicago Ald. Brendan Reilly, who has been critical of Preckwinkle’s policies on taxes and spending in the run-up to the election. He is pledging to address housing shortages with a slew of new construction, which he says will help lower property taxes. He’s also focused on changing how law enforcement is deployed in the county, as well as improving healthcare for seniors and advancing environmental protections in the area, according to his website.
