A firefighter was at Stroger Hospital in serious condition after falling through the first floor and into the basement of a Rogers Park apartment building that erupted in flames Monday afternoon.
The fire was controlled about 12:15 p.m. at a multistory building at 1757 W. North Shore Ave., according to fire spokesperson Larry Merritt.
“There was a mayday call and the firefighter was taken to Stroger in serious condition,” Merritt said.
Deputy District Chief Kelly Burns told reporters the firefighter fell through the first floor and into the basement. Burns did not share the firefighter’s condition.
A “mayday” is an emergency alert meaning they have lost communication with a firefighter who is inside the structure.
Over police radio, an OEMC dispatcher said the firefighter arrived at Stroger at 12:28 p.m., the dispatcher said.
Several people including a dog had been displaced, according to the dispatcher.
As of 1 p.m. Chicago police officers had the scene blocked off to pedestrians and motorists.
