Wednesday’s game between the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays was briefly delayed after the team’s anthem singer suffered a medical emergency.
According to reporters in the ballpark, singer Gerald Chaney was performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” prior to the game when he collapsed on the field near second base.
He was attended to by paramedics, and was taken off the field on a stretcher, according to reporters.
According to the White Sox, Chaney transported to an area hospital for further treatment.
“(Chaney) received treatment by EMTs at the ballpark and was alert prior to being transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment,” the team said. “The entire White Sox family is sending love to Gerald and his family for a full and speedy recovery.”
The game was delayed by just over 10 minutes, according to reporters.
There was no further update on Chaney’s condition at this time. We will update this story with details as they become available.
