Streets were blocked off with crime scene tape and multiple police cars were on scene early Thursday morning in Chicago’s West Woodlawn neighborhood as officials investigate a fatal shooting involving the Illinois State Police.
The incident occurred about 10:50 p.m. in the 6500 block of South Champlain Ave., with ISP officers initially responding to a call of domestic battery. Once they arrived, state police encountered an armed suspect.
Gunshots were fired as a struggle ensued, police said, and the suspect was struck by gunfire.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, ISP said. No officers were injured, and a firearm was recovered.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Chicago police officers also responded to scene after receiving a radio call to help ISP and assist in capacity.
It wasn’t immediately clear why ISP was the responding agency.
In accordance with the Police and Community Relations Act and Illinois State Police Law, ISP’s Division of Internal Investigation Special Agents were investigating the incident, officials said.
As of early Thursday morning, the investigation remains ongoing, with several ISP vehicles blocking streets in the area. Officials with ISP could be seen behind police tape as rain showers fell.
No further details were provided. This is a developing story that will be updated.
