Trader Joe’s, one of the most popular and beloved grocery stores in the U.S., owes some shoppers money as part of a $7.4 million settlement, but there’s a catch.
According to the settlement website, Trader Joe’s has agreed to pay $7.4 million to a settlement fund after a class action lawsuit claimed the grocer printed debit or credit card receipts in a way that potentially put customers at risk of identity theft.
The suit stemmed from an incident at a Florida Trader Joe’s in 2019, when plaintiff Brian Keim said the credit card receipt he was issued for his grocery shopping showed both the first six and last four digital’s of his card number, which violates the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions.
Trader Joe’s has denied these allegations and denies any wrongdoing.
Claim forms are open to submit through summer, the settlement administrator said. But not everyone who files a claim will meet the requirements for a payout, the website showed.
Here’s what to know.
What does the Trader Joe’s class action lawsuit say?
The lawsuit alleges Trader Joe’s “willfully violated FACTA” by printing point-of-sale receipts for credit and debit card transactions that contained the first six and the last four digits of card numbers.
The disclosure, the suit states, “invaded” Keim’s privacy and disclosed his personal financial information to anyone who would have seen the receipt, including the store employee who handed it to him.
Receipts did not include other personal or financial information, the suit states, including middle digits, expiration dates, customer names or addresses.
How to know if you are eligible for a settlement
If you shopped at Trader Joe’s recently, you might not be included. But if you purchased items at a Trader Joe’s store with a credit or debit card during a five-month stretch in 2019, you could be.
According to the settlement administrator, people who used credit or debit cards to purchase goods at certain Trader Joe’s stores between March 5, 2019 and July 19, 2019 may qualify. From there, eligibility is met if payment processing software caused their customer receipt to be formatted to include the first six and the last four of their card numbers.
“It is important to note that not all Trader Joe’s stores printed receipts displaying the first six and last four digits of the card number, and in those stores that did, only a small minority of transactions involved such receipts,” the administrator said. “Therefore, just because you were provided a receipt for a credit or debit card transaction at a Trader Joe’s store during the class period, it does not necessarily mean that you are a Settlement Class Member.”
How much could you get?
Trader Joe’s through its insurer has agreed to pay $7.4 million into a settlement fund, the administrator said. Those funds will be used to pay settlements to class members, attorneys feeds and other court costs.
According to officials, final payments will depend on the total number of eligible claims submitted, with an estimated payout per claim of $102.45.
The deadline for Trader Joe’s to fund the settlement is 10 business days after final approval is granted, the website said. A final court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 10, 2026.
How to file a claim
Claims must be submitted by June 9, 2026.
Most class members received a Class ID and pin number with instructions. Those who do not have the option to download a personalized claim form to print and mail in.
