The Chicago Cubs have made an addition to their beleaguered bullpen, selecting the contract of pitcher Corbin Martin.
Martin has appeared in two relief outings for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs this season, allowing one hit and striking out three batters in two innings of work.
He was added to the team’s 40-man roster on Saturday, while pitcher Cade Horton was transferred to the 60-day injured list after undergoing Tommy John surgery this week, according to the team.
In 34 career MLB games, Martin has a 6.54 ERA, with 76 strikeouts in 75.2 innings with the Astros, Diamondbacks and Orioles.
The Cubs have been decimated by injuries to their pitching staff in the first month of the season, and the latest blow came on Friday when they placed closer Daniel Palenica on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain.
Ethan Roberts suffered a hand injury that landed him on the injured list, and Hunter Harvey was also placed on the injured list earlier this week. Phil Maton was also put on the injured list after the team’s series in Tampa Bay.
The Cubs and Pirates will continue their series at 1:20 p.m. Saturday at Wrigley Field.
