A mom was excited to see the picture her 4-year-old son drew of the family, but couldn’t help noticing one very striking detail.
Every parent should encourage their child to draw pictures. A 2025 empirical study published in the journal Education Sciences found that drawing was a key indicator of a child’s development between the ages of three and five.
Researchers concluded that the development of drawing skills served as an accurate reflection of core cognitive processes such as symbolic thinking, spatial understanding, and the ability to represent ideas visually. Drawing also helps to develop a child’s motor control, symbolism and spatial organization.
Aside from the developmental indicators provided, there is something special for any parent seeing their child’s first forays into the world of artistic interpretation.
Kim Lapointe was certainly excited to see her young son’s first drawing of the family. “He was part of a morning preschool program and, when I picked him up and got home, he was anxious to go through his folder,” Lapointe told Newsweek.
That was when she saw his drawing and noticed one very distinctive detail. “He was so excited to tell me about it, even though the drawing spoke for itself,” she said.
Lapointe’s son had drawn a very cute picture of his family. What was most noticeable, however, was the extra detail he had included to distinguish his mom from the rest of the family. Or rather, the two extra anatomical details he had drawn on his mom’s upper torso. Lapointe couldn’t help but laugh and thought others would likely see the funny side, too.
She shared the picture to her TikTok, @kimmlapointe1, along with a caption stating: “When your 4 year old comes home from school with a family drawing and mom is the only one who looks different from all the boys.”
Viewers on social media were suitably amused. “Children are honest. They only know what they see,” one TikTok user wrote. “Well he’s not wrong,” another said, with a third commenting: “That’s funny I wonder what the teacher thought.”
“It’s called attention to details,” one TikTok user posted, with another adding: “Put that on a Tshirt do lifelong memories.”
This isn’t the first time a child’s drawing has proven popular on social media.
A woman in Georgia was initially delighted when her 6-year-old nephew presented her with a drawing of her alongside his family. Then she noticed one crushing detail.
Then there was the boy in California who drew a self-portrait that was so unusual, his mom was left wondering if they should be “concerned.”
A man in Virginia was left similarly alarmed after finding an old drawing he did of him and his twin. AJ grew up as an only child, but it turned out his family was harboring a wild secret about the sibling he never had.
