The city of Tijuana is looking to improve police oversight and performance, which is why nearly 400 body-worn cameras have been acquired.
Tijuana officials say the use of this technology will not be optional for the police force.
“They purchased body-worn cameras, but their use was not regulated. It was optional, if an officer wanted to use it, fine, and if not, that was fine too. When we began analyzing the possibility of acquiring body-worn cameras, the first thing we did was establish regulations. Now officers are required to use the cameras,” said Ismael Burgueño, Mayor of Tijuana.
According to the Tijuana government, officers who do not activate and use their body-worn cameras will face sanctions.
“If they do not use it, there will be a corresponding sanction, depending on the situation. It is now mandatory; officers must carry and use their body-worn cameras,” Mayor Burgueño added.
The information recorded by the cameras will be for the exclusive use of Tijuana’s department of public safety, and may be reviewed as part of any investigation.
