D.C. police are searching for a car tied to a shooting that injured five people in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood Friday night, not far from the convention center.
Investigators say all five victims are expected to survive.
5th Street Market at the corner of 5th and N Streets Northwest could be seen riddled with bullet holes.
“Something crazy must have happened, and we knew it must have been some sort of shooting or something like that,” said Sean Campbell, who lives nearby.
The five men were shot at the intersection at about 9:20 p.m. the day after Christmas.
“That night coming outside, there were just police all up and down this block,” Campbell said.
When police got to the scene, they found three victims. Officers say two more victims brought themselves to a nearby hospital.
There’s a police surveillance camera on the corner.
Police tell News4 they’re looking for several suspects who fled the scene in a black Honda Accord with D.C. tags
Those who live nearby say the market is a popular hangout.
“Groups of six to eight to 10 can be seen just sort of like hanging out here,” said Aaron Gould, who lives nearby. “So I’m not overly surprised that on a Friday night something would happen.”
People News4 we spoke with in the neighborhood said this shooting reminds them of another one that happened not too far away that killed a congressional intern earlier this year. That shooting happened a block away at M and 7th Streets Northwest in June.
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, 21, was killed, and two others injured. Police have made an arrest in that case.
There’s a heavy National Guard presence in this area, and News4 saw groups of soldiers patrolling near 5th street market the morning after Friday’s shooting.
One neighbor told News4 he feels for the owners of the store.
“There’s a lot in this neighborhood. There’s churches, there’s Dunbar High School over there, There’s low-income housing,” Gould said. “And people still want to run and walk and jog here, so they seem to do their best, or try their best, to serve all those people. So it’s unfortunate. I feel for them and the families of the people who got injured last night.”
Police have yet to release details of what led up to the shooting.
