Live updates: Officer, detectives kick off 3rd day of testimony in Banfield trial

What to Know

• The trial continues Thursday for Brendan Banfield, a Northern Virginia man accused of killing his wife, Christine Banfield, and a stranger, Joseph Ryan, to be with his family’s au pair.
• Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who had an affair with Brendan, was under cross examination for much of Wednesday. She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter for her role in the killings and has been cooperating with investigators.
• Brendan’s defense attorney leaned heavily on the numerous letters Peres Magalhães sent to Brendan, her family and others while in jail in an effort to attack her credibility. She wrote many of the letters before her plea deal.
• In one letter, Peres Magalhães told her family, “we deserve something” while discussing a possible deal she was negotiating with Netflix to tell her story.
• There were some testy moments between Peres Magalhães and attorney John Carroll as he questioned her memory and asked her for clarification throughout her testimony.
• Banfield has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
