Firefighters have evacuated 31 homes in a Centreville, Virginia, neighborhood as crews work to resolve a gas leak discovered after an apparent explosion late Sunday night.
Multiple residents said they heard a loud explosion before seeing massive flames at a home on Quail Pond Court just before 10 p.m., the Fairfax County fire department said.
One person who was inside the home that exploded managed to get out with only minor injuries, fire officials said. Another person in a neighboring home also suffered a minor injury, according to the fire department.
Fire crews were still out at the scene late Monday morning. Officials told News4 that one of three natural gas pipelines in the community has a leak and natural gas is seeping through the ground.
First responders were going door-to-door about 11 a.m. to test the natural gas levels inside each home, officials said. One member of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue was seen putting caution tape in front of the door of a home on the street.
Firefighters told News4 there was a gas company investigating the smell of natural gas on the street before the explosion happened.
News4 drone video taken after the fire shows the home reduced to piles of charred rubble. Parts of it were still smoldering many hours later.
