4 things to know about the weather:
- Chilly, midday showers
- Sunny Friday, Saturday
- Rain/snow risk by Monday
- Way warmer late next week
Even just a few glimmers of sunshine Wednesday pushed temperatures into the mid-50s, as a reminder that winter is on the verge of giving way to spring.
Clouds thickened overnight and there won’t be any sunshine to help us out Thursday. Plan for mid-40s Thursday afternoon.
As for rain chances Thursday, they are focused on the southern half of the DMV – mainly south of the I-66/Route 50 corridor. And the areas that will get rain won’t get much of it: 0.10 to 0.20 inches at most. Those rain chances end around sunset and some clearing will take place overnight as temperatures fall to around 30°.
Sunny skies are coming for both Friday and Saturday. Highs on Friday will climb into the 50s and widespread 60s are likely on Saturday. Our highest temperature of the entire winter has only been 63° so Saturday has a chance to be our warmest day since the day before Thanksgiving when D.C. reached 72°.
That 63° by the way is in a third place tie for the lowest high temperature in winter on record. The warmest day in the winter of 1887-1888 was 61° and 62° was our warmest day in the winter of 2002-2003.

Could it snow on Sunday again?
A cold front will arrive on Sunday morning. North winds and increasing clouds will keep most of the area in the 40s. High pressure entered over upstate New York will wedge cold air down the front of the Appalachians as a storm passes to our south.
This is a classic late winter setup for a mixed precipitation event. There could be a little rain/snow Sunday night into Monday and again Monday night into Tuesday. Just a cold rain would be most likely during the daylight hours.
The timing is still too far out for specifics, but a wet snow of up to 3 inches isn’t out of the question on Monday night. That cold, grey and gloomy pattern will likely last into Wednesday morning before a whole new (much, much warmer) pattern takes hold.
By the end of next week (and the weekend after this one) we’re likely to have at least three to four consecutive days 65° or higher! Start looking for your shorts and t-shirts now.
