4 things to know about the weather:
- More records Wednesday
- Some rain, thunder possible
- March lion roaring Thursday, Friday
- 40° colder next week
All three of our local airports set new records Tuesday!
Tuesday’s 85° at Dulles was 33° above average and 5° above the old record set in 2016. Wednesday’s records are 79° at DCA, IAD & BWI and all three are likely to be tied or broken.
Unlike Tuesday, Wednesday will come with thickening clouds, much higher humidity and a chance for rain.
The rain chances come in two forms: the chance for a passing shower or two in the mid- to late morning, and the risk of an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm in the mid- to late afternoon. If you get missed by the rain Wednesday, you’ll get to enjoy a day that will feel more like early June than mid-March.
A powerful cold front is expected to arrive around daybreak Thursday. Strong southwest winds will hold temperatures near 70° as late as midnight Wednesday night before turning to the northwest.

Temperatures will cool down again
Temperatures will fall quickly. From 70° at midnight to near 50° by 7 a.m. with bursts of rain and maybe even a rumble of thunder. Thursday will be a bitter reminder of how volatile March is. Temperatures will hover in the mid-40s for most of the daylight hours with periods of rain and wind gusts over 40 mph.
The rain will taper off in the afternoon and with some clearing most areas will drop to near 30° by Friday morning.
Friday afternoon will be cloudy and windy once again but the winds (also gusting over 40 mph) will be from the southwest and temperatures will be back in the mid-50s. You also won’t need to worry about rain on Friday or Saturday.
There will be some added sunshine on Saturday with highs in the mid-50s. Rain chances return by Sunday evening and Monday will come with rain, thunderstorms and another shot of cold air.
Temperatures will be near 60° on Monday afternoon before falling into the mid-20s by Tuesday morning.
