A falling tree hit and killed a driver on George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington early Thursday, authorities say. The death comes less than a year after a driver was killed by a falling tree on a different stretch of the federally maintained parkway.
The driver was headed south near Donaldson Run when the tree fell, U.S. Park Police said. Their name was not immediately released. No one else was in the vehicle.
The Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination program began warning of traffic closures in the area at about 7:55 a.m.
All northbound and southbound lanes of the parkway were closed at Spout Run as of about noon.
Less than a year ago, on May 16, a woman died after a tree crashed onto her car on the parkway in Fairfax County during a powerful storm. Marla Holden was 61 and was an “amazing woman” who had been headed home from work, her husband told News4. She was killed near Morningside Lane, about 14 south of where the tree fell on Thursday.
After Holden was killed, crews shut down a portion of the parkway for days to clear hazardous trees.
