4 things to know about the weather:
- Rainy Monday morning
- Dry, blustery afternoon
- Freeze for many Monday night
- More rain Friday
Our two main chances for rain will come first thing Monday morning and then again on Friday.
A strong cold front will pass through the area Monday morning bringing a round of rain showers and a few thunderstorms. Monday’s highs will occur before sunrise following a very mild overnight. Dulles set a new record high of 86° Sunday afternoon.
Temperatures will fall from the mid-60s at 3 a.m. down to near 50° when the rain ends during the morning commute. Gusty northwest winds, near 40 mph at times, will push out the clouds and bring back the sunshine for Monday afternoon. Temperatures should recover to near 60° before nosediving after sunset.
By Tuesday morning, most areas north and west of I-95 will be below freezing while the Urban centers and Southern Maryland stay near 35°. Tuesday will be sunny and chilly with highs around 50° but at least the wind won’t be an issue.
Tuesday night into Wednesday will also be quite cold but with less of a freeze threat. South winds finally return on Wednesday so highs will get back near 60°, which is our seasonal average.

Rain chances this week
Thursday will be nice and warm but with increasing clouds and a risk for rain by late that evening. Highs should reach at least 70° with mid- to upper 70s possible if the clouds can just wait an extra few hours before blocking out the sun.
Friday is likely to be a day much like Monday with rain chances mainly in the morning and a gusty, drying wind in the afternoon. Saturday will be a lot like Tuesday with a freeze likely in the rural areas that morning and highs only near 50° that afternoon.
At least the weekend looks to stay dry for now and the longer range pattern favors above average temperatures starting on Monday and lasting most of next week.
