A traffic stop in the Chillum area led to police fatally shooting a man Thursday evening, Prince George’s County police said.
An officer pulled a driver over at 23rd Avenue and East-West Highway about 8:40 p.m., police said. When a second officer arrived, they asked the driver to get out of the car while one officer searched it.
During the search, the driver jumped back into the car and tried to drive away with an officer still partially in the car, police said.
The officer fired his weapon, hitting the driver, who crashed into a nearby pole, police said.
The driver has been pronounced dead.
Both officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
