New cameras along the Dulles Toll Road are not for catching toll cheats, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
The flock cameras, as they are known, are being installed across Virginia to track license plates for things like stolen vehicles and in response to Amber Alerts, MWAA said.
But their presence near Dulles International Airport came with speculation they are being used to track vehicles on the Dulles Airport Access Road for drivers who may be abusing it to avoid tolls on the Dulles Toll Road.
But MWAA told News4 that’s not what the cameras are for and that they’re strictly a safety measure.
The cameras also are being installed near Reagan National Airport.
