D.C. is going big with Emancipation Day this year while the United States celebrates its 250th birthday.
Rapper T.I. is set to headline D.C.’s Emancipation Day concert Sunday in Franklin Park downtown, taking the stage with Grammy winners Mýa and Tye Tribbett, plus local groups Backyard Band featuring Sugar Bear and Black Alley. Expect to also see something from “44: The Musical,” a new stage show about former President Barack Obama.
D.C. celebrates Emancipation Day every year on April 16 to mark the day in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the District, freeing more than 3,000 people. It was a joyful day that came after decades of effort by abolitionists and amid the Civil War.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a big lineup of events Monday.
“Washington, DC has always been at the center of America’s story — and this week, we’re kicking off our celebrations like only DC can,” Bowser said in a statement. “From the fields at RFK to Franklin Park in the heart of Downtown, we have something for everyone. So come out, bring your friends and family, enjoy a beautiful week in DC, and be part of history.”
