A 2-year-old boy is missing after his mother was shot and killed in Washington, D.C., late Tuesday, police said.
An urgent search is underway for the boy, Royce Hawkins, police said Wednesday morning.
Hawkins was last seen about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday near the 500 block of Kenyon Street NW, according to an Amber Alert from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), hours before police found his mother fatally injured. He was wearing a long-sleeved blue and yellow striped shirt, the alert said.
Police rushed to the scene of a shooting in the 600 block of Kenyon Street NW just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to MPD, which is a few blocks from the Washington Medstar Hospital Center campus.
A woman was found in an alley with gunshot wounds. She was unconscious and not breathing, police said.
DC Fire and EMS tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.
The victim’s child has not been seen since the shooting. Anyone with information about the child is asked to call 911.
A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the homicide case.
