Opponents of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Maryland put their fight on a new billboard.
The sign posted on Dual Highway in Washington County reads, “ICE Camp is planned 5.6 miles ahead.” It adds, “Not in our community.”
It’s the latest action by Hagerstown Rapid Response, a group fighting the planned ICE detention center in Williamsport.
The Department of Homeland Security bought a large warehouse in a private sale last year, then announced plans for it to become a detention facility.
Maryland’s attorney general was granted an extended temporary restraining order last week, pausing major work on the warehouse for now. A federal judge found that DHS had not done its due diligence with environmental studies and communication with the state and nearby residents.
A DHS spokesperson previously told News4 they disagree with the ruling.
