A 5-year-old boy and two men were shot Tuesday night in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood.
All three victims’ injuries are non-life-threatening and are expected to survive, according to police.
People at a nearby sports field heard the gunshots and ducked to the ground.
Police say at 7:00 p.m, two armed men fired indiscriminately at a group of people that were standing about 100 to 150 feet away.
Police were unable to provide much of a description of the gunmen, except to say they wore dark clothing as they ran from the area on foot.
“When the officers were on the scene initially, they were advised that a child had also been shot and had been transported from the location by a parent,” Interim Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll said.
People in this neighborhood say they had felt the tension was rising there, and they talked to police about it.
Police say they have been listening and targeted the area for additional patrols to address the situation.
“People in Shaw in general deserve better, but the people at the Second Northwest Cooperative absolutely need more safety measures. They need more for this community,” Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Nicole Shea said. “Folks have kids. They need to be able to feel like their kids can play outside.”
