A family was displaced and two pets died following a fire Thursday evening in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, according to the police department.
Officials said around 5:06 p.m., on April 23, Gloucester Township Police responded to Amber Court in Blackwood after receiving a report of heavy smoke coming from a home.
When first responders arrived, they observed heavy smoke coming from the home, which had its front door locked. Firefighters then forced entry to ensure there were no occupants inside. Officials said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.
Crews put out the fire about 10 minutes later, according to police.
Officials said the home sustained heavy smoke and soot damage and was deemed unhabitable, displacing the family. Moreover, police said two pets were found dead inside the home.
The American Red Cross and the Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management were notified to help the family, but their services were not required because the family had already arranged an alternate housing option.
The Station 84 Fire Marshal is investigating the fire. However, officials said it is not believed to be suspicious.
“This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly fire conditions can develop, both inside and outside
the home. Residents are urged to follow all applicable fire safety regulations and to ensure that smoke
alarms are properly installed and functioning in all living areas,” police wrote in a release.
