A decomposed body was found in a home in Stamford after an hours-long standoff on Tuesday, according to police.
Officers responded to the home on Oaklawn Avenue around 9:15 a.m. after getting a 911 call from a state marshal who was attempting to serve an eviction notice.
As the officers arrived, they determined they were dealing with a barricaded suspect in the home, Police Chief Tim Shaw said.
Hostage negotiators arrived and did make contact with the person inside, later identified as 63-year-old Jed Parkington.
A Special Response Team was called to the scene and as they arrived, they came under fire from inside the house. The officers returned fire, Shaw said.
At some point during the standoff, police heard a single gunshot from inside the home. Officers then used drones to try and determine the condition of Parkington.
Once a drone was inside the home, police saw several explosives, including a pipe bomb, grenades, and molotov cocktails, the chief said. The bomb squad was brought in to render the home safe.
During the search for explosives, a decomposed body was discovered concealed on the second floor, according to the chief. The Stamford Police Department Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances around the second body.
Parkington was dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Shaw said.
The Office of the Inspector General is investigating the exchange of gunfire involving the Stamford officers, and the State Police Major Crimes Division was brought in to process the scene, according to the chief.
