Norway’s Sturla Holm Laegreid won bronze in the men’s 20km biathlon Tuesday, but its what he said after competition that’s shocked the world.
The 28-year-old biathlete gave a stunning post-competition interview on live TV moments after clinching an Olympic medal where he confessed to cheating on his girlfriend.
In the interview with state broadcaster NRK, Laegreid said he was making the admission in a form of “social suicide” in hopes of winning her back. He broke down in tears during the interview.
The World Cup winner said he’d met the love of his life about six months ago, but a few months later cheated on her. He apparently told her about the infidelity last week and the couple broke up.
Laegreid went on to say he wanted to be a good role model by admitting his mistakes.
The biathlete came in third in men’s 20km biathlon behind fellow Norwegian Johan-Olav Botn, who one gold, and Eric Perrot of France.
